secretary4hire is the freelance typing and virtual secretarial business created and managed by Marj Massie.

Marj’s dream was to run her own secretarial business and she had the idea of the concept of this around fifteen years ago, but it was unfortunately before technology and the internet was good enough to make a business like this viable. Now that dream is realised since founding Secretary4hire in June 2006. Marj and her team provide secretarial & admin support to businesses and individuals round the globe with clients as near as Glasgow city centre and as far as Australia. Using the latest technology, hardware, software and, most importantly, almost 30 years of knowledge of the industry, businesses and individuals alike are now reaping the benefits of having secretary4hire as their outsourced contact for all types of secretarial, admin & PA projects.

“I am a trained transcriber, secretary & PA and have been working in this industry since 1982.

As an “employed” person, my background disciplines are banking, insurance, Independent Financial Advisory work, life assurance & pensions, the building trade, conveyancing, law (all of these mentioned previously were all whilst being employed by Clydesdale Bank from 1982 until 1999), conveyancing, actuarial, geology, licensed trade, hotel industry & event planning.

I started out working life as a Deeds Typist on an old rusty manual typewriter. The strict discipline instilled in me all those years ago when, if you made even one typing error (even if it was in the last line of a 4 page single-spaced foolscap document), you had to rip it up and start again. Working under that pressure taught you to be fast and accurate under the glare of the Deeds Supervisor. I worked my way around various departments in the Clydesdale Bank, accumulating vast knowledge of the different disciplines it took to run a banking network in those days – including things like building new property and maintaining the buildings, the re-branding of the company and subsequent re-write of company policy & literature, of which I was at the head of the project’s secretarial team.

I left the Clydesdale Bank in 1999 to further my career and took up my first PA post for an actuarial & accounting firm.

A further PA role in which a lot of my time was organising conferences and events all around the world opened my eyes to the wider scope of secretarial services.

Before taking the plunge with secretary4hire, most recently I was a medical secretary for two years, working in one of the major general hospitals in Glasgow.”
